The Tigers are the one bad team I can't quit for Best Bets because they are on the precipice of being a division contender. They are very young team with good young players and pitchers getting healthy. Tarik Skubal is one of those pitchers. He's only thrown 38.1 IP but the stuff has looked electric. The 3.76 ERA is a little deceiving because he also a 1.99 FIP. Over time that should even out and settle in the lower 3's.what's been incredibly impressive is how he's kept the ball in the yard. 1 home run allowed in 38.1 IP is awesome. He's also paring that absurdly low home run rate with a 28.3% k% and a 4.6% BB%. The big southpaw's getting it done with a fastball that sits at 96 MPH and healthy mix of slider and change-up. He's also added a curveball and a sinker to force hitters to consider different breaks. He's become a stud and should end up in Cy Young conversations in the near future.
The other side of this is that Jameson Taillon has been real bad this year. His resilienece as a human is incredible and should be lauded, but I don't think he's going to be in the MLB for much longer. a 5.56 ERA and 4.78 FIP is bad, while the walk rate is respectable at 6.8%., he's no longer striking out batters, with only a 19.8% punch out rate. I do like the spin rate on his pitches but man, Baseball Savant page is rugged.
So yeah, Taillon has a real chance to get shelled by Kerry Carpenter and the boys.
